What happens when language becomes a creative partner?

Join contemporary artists Sasha Stiles and Nathaniel Stern for Language as Collaborator: Co-Creating with Thinking Machines, a  hands-on workshop exploring how humans and machines can think, write, imagine and create together through poetry, storytelling, visual art, and generative AI.

Inspired by ideas in Generation to Generation: Conversing with Kindred Technologies, participants will experiment with language, images, and technology as creative systems shaped by memory, collaboration, and play.

Through collaborative exercises, group storytelling, and live generative tools, participants will create original poems, prompts, and imaginative works while learning how AI systems generate language and meaning. The workshop will also explore how human choices, ideas, and creativity continue to guide and shape those systems.

Rather than treating technology as separate from art or humanity, Stiles and Stern approach AI as a new kind of collaborator: a tool for remixing ideas, uncovering patterns, and expanding how we express ourselves.

Designed for curious participants ages 10 and older, this workshop offers an accessible introduction to creative AI while encouraging conversation about imagination, authorship, and the future of human expression.

No technical experience is required. Bring your curiosity, openness, and willingness to experiment. The workshop is a great opportunity for adults and young people to participate side-by-side.
