Celebratory Reception, "Crafting Sanctuaries: Black Spaces of the Great Depression South"

This event is no longer on sale.

Sunday August 31

3:00 PM  –  5:00 PM

Join us on the third floor of the Museum of Art + Light to celebrate the opening of our special temporary exhibition organized by Art Bridges and curated by Tamir Williams, PhD. This selection of 1930s-era black-and-white photographs were taken by a group of photographers recruited by the Farm Security Administration. Their role was to document the experiences and worlds of Black and White farm workers in the South in the 1930s. Crafting Sanctuaries presents an unseen and alternative view of Great Depression imagery as many photos from the FSA project that were mass circulated reflect a narrower experience of white sharecroppers and tenant farmers. This exhibition offers alternative FSA photos of private dwellings and gathering spaces of Black Southerners in the rural south—as way to change how we imagine this era, history, and experience. A reception is available in the museum atrium from 3:00-4:00 p.m., followed by a short gallery talk in the exhibition at 4:00 p.m. This event is free for all, please register your attendance in advance.
